Olive and Olive Oil

Today, the word 'oil', which has different meanings in all of Western languages, derives from the word 'eleia', which means olive tree in ancient Greek. Olive cultivation is considered to have begun with the first people on earth and "olive considered as the first tree of all trees".
The significance of olive in the history of mankind is included in all holy books in the legends of creation and establishment. In classical mythology, a particular tree is attributed to every God and when these citations are examined, it is seen that they are always loaded with meaning and that the corresponding tree is closely related to the God's identity.

Zeus, the head of the Gods in ancient Greece, promised that the God or Goddess who gave the most precious gift to man would be the ruler of the newly established city. The sea God Poseidon and the Goddess of wisdom Athena, who heard this news, enter into a great struggle. Poseidon created the magnificent ''Horse'' which will lead people to unexplored, remote lands and Athena created the ''Olive Tree'' which will be blessing and life source for mankind for centuries.

Only one of these gifts presented to the people was worth more and the city acknowledged that Olive was indeed a source of blessing. Upon this the newly established city has been given the name "Athens" in honor of Athena. So actually olives we use today almost everywhere in our lives, sent as a gift to the earth.
